Mount San Michele Museum: The memory of the First World War comes to life in an immersive museum
An interactive experience to discover and live the Great War
The new layout of the Mount San Michele Museum is part of a broader project to enhance the entire monumental area.
The guiding concept of the rearrangement of the Museum and the external paths starts from a highly experiential approach, with tools and contents (in Italian and English) that can transmit not only information but also emotions, offer an engaging experience, and therefore is more interesting for all target audiences: adults, students and children.
Interactive room
The first interactive room has an educational purpose and has two touch screens: a horizontal one, dedicated to interactive cartography that sweeps across the conflict, showing the variation of the war fronts utilizing a time bar, zooming in from the European scenario to the local one down to the detail of Mount San Michele with in-depth texts and images.
The other vertical touch screen presents the 3D reconstruction of the Mount San Michele tunnel system, which allows you to explore the Cannoniera tunnels and the Lukachich Cave, which is no longer accessible.
Artifacts room
In the artifacts room, objects symbolic of the conflict and of the lifestyle of the time can be found: weapons and gas masks used during the various attacks, machine guns, barbed wire, pliers and hand grenades used in trench warfare.
On the walls are placed the rifles, the Austro-Hungarian mace, helmets and tools for digging the trench supplied to the infantrymen of the two armies.
A double screen allows the viewing of period video clips granted by the Cineteca del Friuli that narrate moments of the conflict, in particular with images dedicated to the Lower Isonzo, Gorizia and Mount San Michele front.
VR room
A large room is entirely dedicated to VR 360 virtual reality, which uses Virtours technology, conceived and created by Ikon, for the management and use of virtual reality content. In this room 15 workstations with headsets and headphones allow visitors to dive into the places of the Great War on the front of the lower Isonzo.
The external visit routes
Outside the museum, there is the opportunity to follow a path to discover the trenches and visit the gunboat where it is possible to have an experience enriched by Augmented Reality (AR).
Through their smartphone, the visitor sees 3D hologramsappear and animate on the screen inserted in the framed environment. In addition, you can listen to some stories related to the events of these places.
